Job Description

DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) seeks Graphic Design and Digital Media Specialist (GDDMS) to join our dynamic team and support our mission of using food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds, and build communities. As a nationally acclaimed, well-respected nonprofit, DCCK is poised to achieve new levels of local and national prominence. We are looking for candidates with a strong graphic design background with experience executing digital media content for nonprofits, social enterprises, and/or political activism efforts. This position requires an understanding of how meaningful online engagement connects to fundraising, and at least an intermediate level of technical digital media and graphic design abilities.

The Graphic Design and Digital Media Specialist is responsible for designing all online and print collateral as well as  strategic and operational activities relating to DCCK’s online presence and visibility. This position is responsible for ensuring the generation of high-quality, ongoing, and focused content for DCCK websites, email newsletters, and social media channels. The GDDMS manages DCCK’s digital media properties and provides creative and technical support for DCCK’s websites, social media channels, email marketing database, and online advertising platforms. The GDDMS is also responsible for search engine optimization activities, web-based advertising strategies and implementation, web-related CRM activities, and technical oversight of our WordPress website. The GDDMS reports to the Associate Director of Communications.

This position is structured within the organization as part of the Development and Communications team, and development forms a significant aspect of the position’s work and measurement of success. As a primary brand ambassador for DC Central Kitchen with our highly engaged audience of local supporters, the GDDMS will create a level of compelling online engagement throughout the year that connects our community to the work we do, and inspires participation as volunteers, donors, and attendees at our legendary annual fundraising events. The GDDMS also collaborates closely with their counterpart for DCCK’s national program, The Campus Kitchens Project, to share ideas and best practices for social media strategy and evaluation, share responsibilities, and complement one another’s efforts.

Requirements

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Graphic design for online and print collateral
  • Manage all DCCK email marketing, web and social media engagement
  • Implement innovative strategies for expanding the reach and engagement of DCCK email list and social media followings
  • Develop engaging content for website and social media channels and execute highly effective and creatively designed digital marketing pieces (e.g. e-newsletters, breaking news e-blasts, focused donation forms, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to websites, hosting, SSL
  • Contribute to and support marketing and branding strategies for DCCK events and online promotions; responsible for driving online ticket purchases to annual fundraising events 
  • Support event photography in partnership with DCCK staff, as needed
  • Use Google Analytics and other tools to analyze and report performance measures to key organizational stakeholders, and provide strategies for improvement
  • Contribute digital marketing strategies to Fresh Start Catering and other DCCK social enterprises to increase sales and awareness
  • Manage departmental volunteers and interns as needed
  • Collaborate with the Online Community Engagement Manager for The Campus Kitchens Project (CKP), supporting specifically on: 1) Providing technical support (specifically in editing, hosting, and programming of the CKP website); 2) Sharing and discussing emerging trends to create a community of practice and complement one another’s efforts. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Will not directly supervise staff

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2+ years of experience in graphic design
  • 2+ years of experience implementing web marketing and social media strategies
  • 2+ years of experience in fundraising, advocacy, marketing, or a related field
  • 2+ years of experience managing websites with a high level of independence
  • Experience in Social Media, Email, and Search Engine Marketing including paid channels (MailChimp, Facebook Ads, Google Adwords, etc.)
  • Excellent writing and editing skills to craft web copy
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of programming HTML/CSS, with knowledge of Wordpress.org CMS and SSL certificates, along with strong website management skills; some knowledge of PHP and Javascript a plus
  • Basic to intermediate photography and video editing skills
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite; photo editing skills required
  • Advanced knowledge of  Dreamweaver, Microsoft Office
  • Experience with web hosting and troubleshooting web hosting issues
  • Experience with analytics tools (Google Analytics) and knowledge of meaningful social media metrics
  • Ability to manage projects independently and deliver on deadlines
  • A high level of comfort working with staff from diverse backgrounds and maintaining working relationships; an ability to engage with on-the-ground staff to gather and shape interesting news stories
  • Comfort with a collaborative writing and editing process, as well as a highly diverse workplace
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES: 
  • Currently this position does not require a certification or license; however this is subject to change at the company’s discretion.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Moderate physical activity required. 
  • May need to work (some) evenings and weekends.
  • Capable of independent travel.
  • Perform general physical activities that require considerable use of arms, legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Able to bend, lean, reach and stoop without hindrance. Possess fine motor skills, stand and/or walk for long periods.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel or crouch; talk and hear; taste or smell. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • Ability to work in an environment where exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, fumes, dirt, smoke, loud noise, and a variety of odors is common.
