Job Description

Very busy orthopedic surgery office is seeking intelligent, driven and reliable candidates for our Newburyport, MA location, with flexibility to travel to other office locations as needed.

Cast Technician - Responsible for the casting, splinting, and bracing of patients in an outpatient setting on the order of referring clinician

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • According to physician/physician assistant order;
  • Applies, removes, and adjusts plaster and fiberglass casts and splints
  • Applies and adjusts prefabricated splints and braces
  • Removes sutures and staples
  • Assists physicians with clinical procedures, including removal of pins and the closed reduction of fractures
  • Applies and removes wound and incisional dressings as directed by clinician
  • Fits and trains patients to use axillary crutches and canes
  • Educates patients on the proper care and use of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and mobility aids
  • Maintains inventory of cast room materials and places orders for supplies when necessary
  • Ability to train new staff members in cast room procedures

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in health science, exercise science, or a similar field OR technical training, specifically in an Orthopedic Technologist program
  • Minimum of 2 years work experience as an orthopedic technician
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, wound care, and basic orthopedic principles
  • Experience with computer systems, including Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, and some web based applications
  • HIPAA and other regulatory policies
  • Insurance regulations, policies and procedures
  • Medical office procedures, policies, practices and medical terminology, and professional etiquette

  • Ability to communicate, comprehend, and converse effectively in spoken and written English with coworkers, patients, and families
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team to improve operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members
  • Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff, and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving.
  • Ability to represent our organization in a professional manner

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently
  • Ability to handle stress, fast paced work environment, which includes standing through the majority of the shift
