Job Description

The position of Junior Accountant (JA) is a full-time exempt management position which provides support to the  Corporation in the areas of finances and human resources. The JA will serve in a key financial capacity working independently with little supervision from the ED but in tandem with other Corporation administrative staff as necessary for compliance. The JA will also have frequent interaction with a wide range of investigators, coordinators, support staff, Board members and sponsors.

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

-Responsible for processing payroll using a third party payroll system.

-Maintain accuracy of information in the third party payroll system (information used to allocate payroll by project.

-Provides human resource management data processing/set-up for all employees

-Provides financial application of and insures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

-Ensures compliance with OMB Circulars A-110, A-122 and A-133.

-Prepares financial statements and audit ready books for Project Accounting and Consolidation

-Exhibits a working knowledge of Sarbanes-Oxley and its ramifications.

-Assists with the proper tracking of revenues and expenditures.

-Remains current on relevant government policy and procedures regarding non-profit and grants/contract accounting.

-Reviews, quotes, and recommends changes to employee benefit, accounting, insurance and other vendors, including: health insurance, D&O insurance, workman’s compensation insurance, payroll processing companies, audit firms, etc.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

-Processes Payroll and manages the HR process

-Supervises Principal Investigator accounts.

-Maintains general ledger.

-Processes Purchasing and A/P when necessary

-Establishes and sets-up new employees and projects in all financial and benefit systems.

-Prepares monthly, quarterly, annual reports.

-Analyzes and reconciles all General Ledger Accounts

-Provides budget vs. actual comparisons.

-Handles all accounting and finance activities for 30 + researchers and more than 100 accounts.

-Manages and maintains all investigators accounts (with assistance) and prepares and distributes monthly investigator account reports.

-Retains current knowledge of all benefit packages available to Corporation employees.

-Works with third party administrators to enroll, change and terminate employee benefits including COBRA.

-Notifies plan administrators of changes from participant requests and terminations.

-Responds to: requests for employment verifications, unemployment claims and Worker’s Compensation claims.

-Efficiently administers accounting/finance tasks brought about by new hires, ongoing benefit/status changes, termination, performance appraisal.

-Establish and maintain personnel and benefit files for each employee in accordance with Corporation policy and regulatory requirements.

-Initiates Inter-agency Personnel Agreements (IPAs) as requested.

-Manages and maintains all investigators accounts (with assistance from ED) and prepares and distributes monthly investigator account reports.

-Special assignments as requested by the ED.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS

-Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or Business required.

-Non-profit and/or University grant and contract accounting experience, preferred. 

-Knowledge of GAAP required.

-Ability to perform fund and project accounting.

-Ability to prepare audit-ready financials & work with independent audit firm.

-Possess strong understanding of HR benefits. HR experience desirable.

-Demonstrated ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite

-Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge product desired

-Detail-oriented and the ability to multi-task while managing competing priorities.

-Flexible with strong interpersonal and teamwork skills and positive attitude.

-Excellent oral and written communication skills with an ability to interact with senior management and high-level officers both internal and external to the Corporation.

-Strong organizational skills, ability to solve problems, meet deadlines and the ability to work independently in a fast paced environment.
